OK, first: the basics.

This little-known or used astrological tool is called a Profection Year.

A Profection Year is an astrological timing technique that connects your age to a specific House in your birth chart, creating a 12-year cycle. You’ll go through all 12 Houses of the Zodiac in completing that cycle. This technique (developed by ancient astrologers) helps to highlight for you the themes you’ll experience as you go through that year.

So – when you’re 10, the 10th House is highlighted. After age 12, we start at the First House and go around again. So at age 19, you’re focusing on 8th House topics and experiences. And…so on. Here’s a chart to help you navigate to your current age.

As you advance around this wheel, each time you hit a particular house, the events and happenings that impact these themes can take on different forms and different levels of challenge – or ease – depending on your own development. If there’s a particular House you always seem to have trouble with, that’s the place to really focus so the next time around, you’ll benefit from your efforts.

**Please note that the chart starts over after year 71. Year 72 is house 1, year 73 is house 2, year 74 is house 3 and so on.

Now that you’ve found the House for the age you are currently, let’s look at how it plays out and the themes you can expect to take center stage.

First House is all about The Year of the Self. You’re learning to trust yourself more, seeing your true nature breaking through. This is a year of focusing on your independence, personal goals and growing your self-confidence. Your identity is at the core of all that happens this year and likely, you’ll feel like you’ve finally figured out who you are.

Second House, this is The Year of Stability. Your job is to focus on your values, finances and making a stable life. You are learning how to create a foundation for yourself.

Third House, this is The Year of Communication. How you interact with your immediate environment, close friends, siblings and your community will be very relevant during this year. Learning a new language or expressing thoughts effectively are also highlighted. Since communication is about the Mind, the way you think will likely play a major role in what unfolds during this year.

Fourth House is The Year of the Home. You may well move or renovate your home during this important year. Your desire to find your roots, hunting for ancestors on-line or building emotional security will take center stage. Making a nurturing environment will become very important to you.

Fifth House is The Year of Pleasure. This includes new romance, making babies, embracing creative endeavors or just indulging in joy and happiness (in whatever form that takes) will be themes that show up in this year.

Sixth House is The Year of Health. You may well decide this is the time to go on a juice fast, get really into fitness or just take your heart health more seriously. Lots of people do a lot of doctoring or retreats designed to gain optimal levels of health during this year. Mental health is absolutely on the table as well. Adopting work-life balance routines can play a major role in this year’s activities.

Seventh House guides us to The Year of Relationships. Many people get married, move in with each other, start up a business with a partner. It’s about collaboration & intense partner experiences. Learning about compromise and negotiation is definitely on tap for this year!

Eighth House is more intimate still – it’s The Year of Transformation. A lot of couples find out what marriage is all about in this year – and for some, that means an ending to that legal contract. Transformative events such as dealing with in-laws, uncovering secrets, really understanding true intimacy can surface. Also, it’s a year about Death so you may have relationships leave – or family members pass away – and this passage takes over the experiences of this year’s events.

Ninth House is The Year of Exploration. Getting out of your comfort zone is on the agenda for this year. You may even move abroad or get immersed in another culture. Expanding your mind in terms of higher education or seeing your belief systems come crumbling down, only to be replaced by new can be important themes this year.

Tenth House is The Year of Career. Some people also experience this year as the year of reputation. What are you known for (or what do you want to be known for – your legacy)? This year can be consumed with career goals – or re-evaluating your career altogether. You might reach some pretty big milestones this year – or make a major shift in a new direction. Either way, it’s about learning about responsibility and leadership.

Eleventh House is The Year of Social Circles. Your friend groups, your teams, your clubs and groups. Sometimes they are driven by proximity but many times, it’s about passions you share. The 11th House can also be firing up passions as it relates to social justice, how we’re all connected. You’re going to see how we inter-relate this year – up close and personal.

Twelfth House is the year you sit back and assess. It’s The Year of Surrender. How are you connected to God (or not) – this may come up. Assessing the past cycle is a big part of the themes….any of the topics may surge to the fore as the one that got away or the one I really messed up on. So it is about reflection – but not regrets. There’s another cycle you’re preparing for, all set to start again as the next year (Year ONE) gets underway!
