OK – so first: Saturn. Let’s talk about how Saturn works in your life.
Saturn is one of the most feared & least understood cycles in all of Astrology. Many people see Saturn’s power as disciplinary action (and that sounds about as good as a root canal on a sunny summer day) to create change in one’s life, but what if Saturn were seen as a more important GUIDE of our grown-up self? The somewhat crusty (yet loveable) teacher who barely gave us a smile, but when they did, it lights up a room? To that end, let’s cast Saturn as a Sacred Initiation and the part of you that marks time as opportunity, not rough course correction. Sure, there’s a bit of discipline involved, but you’re really the one with the Soul’s roadmap.
The one who has places to go and people to see…and dammit, you’re gonna do it well!
Now that we’ve rebranded Saturn, I’m going to show you how that shift of perspective can help you in big (and small) ways. To start, instead of focusing on the 29 ½ year cycle (known as the Saturn Return), let’s zoom in on the cycles leading up to those major milestones. Then, I’ll show you what I mean by Saturn leaves a gifty when he moves out.
The Saturn Cycle: The Architecture of Your Life
- Full cycle: ~29.5 years
- Each quarter phase: ~7–7.5 years
- Key turning points:
- Opening Square (~age 7) (and ~36–37, ~66–67)
- Opposition (~age 14–15) (and ~43–45, ~73–75)
- Closing Square (~age 21–22) (and ~50–52, ~80–82)
- Saturn Return (~29–30)
Then the cycle repeats at higher levels of responsibility and awareness.
I. The Opening Square – Saturn Transit Square Natal Saturn
Theme: First Contact with Reality
This is the first “test” of the cycle. You’re moving out of pure instinct and into your first brush with authority and structure. Pay attention to which signs and Houses are impacted by this square: it will help to know the energy and the parts of your life that are in *tension* with each other.
- You become aware of rules, authority, expectations
- There’s often a moment of realizing: “I have to do things I don’t want to do”
- Responsibility begins forming your identity
Psychologically: This is when the ego meets limitation.
In adult cycles (36–37, 66–67):
- You hit a pressure point: “Is what I’ve built actually working?”
- Life demands adjustment, not comfort
How to work with it:
- Don’t resist structure—refine it
- Identify what’s not sustainable and start correcting it early
- Build discipline instead of waiting for crisis
👉 This phase asks: “Are you willing to grow up into your next level?”
II. The Opposition Phase – Transiting Saturn Opposition Natal Saturn
Theme: Confrontation & Identity Testing
This is the halfway point of the cycle—and it’s intense. It brings in the energy of the sign opposition as well. We’ve long talked about balancing the polarity of the two signs and in this case, it’s the energy of the opposition that will help you navigate it best. The Houses also show you what part of life is being activated.
- You face a mirror: what you’ve built vs. what’s true
- There’s often rebellion, tension, or a breaking point
- You become aware of the gap between:
- Your authentic self
- Your conditioned life
At 14–15:
- Identity crisis, separation from authority (parents)
At 43–45 (midlife checkpoint):
- Classic midlife reckoning
- Career, relationships, purpose all come under review
How to work with it:
- Be radically honest: what is no longer aligned?
- Don’t numb or avoid—this phase demands truth
- Course-correct boldly, even if it’s uncomfortable
👉 This phase asks: “Is this life actually yours?”
III. The Closing Square: Transiting Saturn squares your natal Saturn again
Theme: Crisis of Commitment
This is the final push before the Saturn return. Reflect on which signs and Houses are involved in this *tension*.
- Reality demands: choose your path
- You can’t stay in indecision anymore
- You must either:
- Commit to your current direction
- Or dismantle and rebuild
At 21–22:
- Career direction, independence, adulthood choices
At 50–52:
- Second major life restructuring (often tied to legacy, purpose)
How to work with it:
- Get serious about what you’re building
- Cut what’s draining or misaligned
- Make decisions based on long-term integrity, not short-term comfort
👉 This phase asks: “What are you actually building with your life?”
By working with the Saturn Cycle, you’re embracing and harnessing its power and energy. By the time you reach your Saturn Return, you’ll have practice and have built resiliency. The gifty that Saturn leaves is built into the practice and the discipline….they are their own reward. They leave you much more adept and capable, ready to embrace the opportunities that
appear on your path moving forward.
It is here I will extend an invitation: on May 26 & 27, I will be taking you through the upcoming North Node shift into Aquarius, South Node shift into Leo. I will chart all the aspects to this major Astrological Call to Action and show you how to work with it in your life. The overall themes for society will become more pronounced and intense and it’s likely we’ll need to band
together to embrace the Age of Aquarius sooner rather than later. Are you ready to step into your Calling as Spiritual leadership? If so, jump on board!

I literally just completed my second Saturn return in Pisces in my 10th house. And I can tell you I’ve completely restructured my professional and career life and my public reputation. It was brutal but in the end, I’m coming out transformed in ahead and poised for many years to come thank you, Saturn.
MJ- Awesome content on the Saturn cycles! What cycle covers the age of 60?
It’s interesting to look back at the challenges going on in my life when I was the ages associated with each ‘quarter phase.’ Opening square at about age 7 my parents’ divorce became final. Starting at about 4, I’d held the belief that it was my job to take care of my mother and sisters and I felt that more strongly after the divorce, terrified but believed Jesus would keep monsters away. Opposition Phase at 14 – 15, a ‘punk rocker’ disgusted with “society’s” rules, expectations to conform, and adults dictating what I could do. Complete rebellion, broke rules, did not accept that anyone had authority over me, felt I was solely responsible for myself & my life. At 43 – 44, the 2008 financial crisis, I took over managing my husband’s and my mortgage/finances, pushed for recognition at work, took on more roles to show I could do / learn to do anything thrown at me. Closing Square, 21 – 22, quit a job I really needed to stop being bullied by my manager, supported myself & boyfriend at the time, ended up getting a job for a company I worked for, for 17 years. Took on more responsibility over the years, got experience that led to a career. 50 – 52, my husband (not the boyfriend) had experienced 10 years of health issues ending in disability and I needed to earn for two. Had accrued a huge amount of debt from loans to keep the house while paying medical bills, terrified of becoming homeless. Learned new skills, took on more responsibility when company I worked for was acquired, then decided I would quit vs. working for my new manager (liked to humiliate people on his team, not willing to take that). Ultimately met people during the final weeks of work for that company who brought me into a new career earning more money. Now I’m 60, still not in good financial health, mostly due to failed side-hustles and bad habits, diagnosed with mental health issues (ADHD, T2BP) that got worse during menopause, and now realizing that working 60 – 80-hour workweeks might not be sustainable until I’m in my 70s – goes with the higher paying job. On the other hand, setting higher expectations of my husband, asking him to do more. Planning to down size, clear clutter, sell or give away stuff, placing clear intentions of having more than enough money. Feels like time for the next big change. Throughout have been either deeply into spiritual growth or completely letting it go by the wayside. Getting back in deep feels like part of the next big change.
Everyone born within a 2 year period shared the same north and south nodes. Doesn’t that generalize this astrological aspect making it just a generational influence?
