First, yes, the North Node (and South Node) show your evolutionary soul’s journey and your ultimate life goal. Most people don’t even know about this very special mathematical point in your Natal Chart. It’s the key to so much! However, to truly understand the North Node/South Node’s significance in your particular life, you must couple it with the House (or Houses) they are in – this will tell you the area of life your life, in which your Mission & Purpose will be expressed. For example, the 6th or 10th House is definitely focused on work or a job/career path, but the 5th House may point to children or creative endeavors. The 11th House, public service or social networks can be the reason for your life here on Earth. The 1st House, well, that’s about you developing YOU. The one House in the Birth Chart that says “you do you” and MEANS IT.
Let’s go deeper: For a deeper understanding of this Nodal directive of mission & purpose, you’ll also need to look to see if other planets are *talking* to your North and South Nodes. Meaning, do you have a planet or another point, perhaps an angle aspecting them? Your Sun is conjunct your South Node? That can bring a focus on Past Life energies and patterns that can seem to dominate your life until you learn how to stop seeing this as a curse and harness these *gifts* for your highest good. Is your North Node sitting right on your Ascendant? That can mean your mission is to develop your personal expression in the world.
Next stop: Let’s look at your Sun and Moon in the natal chart and how they grow and develop over time. The first one is your regular birth chart, the second part of that sentence points to something called a Progressed Chart – or Secondary Progressed Chart. That chart will show the maturity and the energy available to you. Not everyone takes advantage of this growth, but when you’re looking at Mission and Purpose, this extra step can prove to be a game changer.
You’re wanting to see how the Sun and the Moon sit in your chart – what sign and what House, specifically, in order to understand your core motivations in this life (Sun) and your emotional needs (Moon). Then, note how these two luminaries interact with the North Node and South Node – if at all. It’s worth it to make note if they are in harmony or not. Harmony might look like your Sun, Moon and North Node are all in Air signs (Gemini, Libra or Aquarius) or all in Cardinal signs (Aries, Libra, Cancer, Capricorn) – that’s some powerful alignment!
If you’re up for it, pull the Secondary Progressed chart and follow that same path. Your Sun moves one degree for every year of life (if your 60, your sun is 60 degrees away – a perfect sextile, by the way – from your Natal Sun. Sextiles and Trines in this progressed Sun sign will usually be a great opportunity for easy flow and expansion. Squares happen at 90 years, so I doubt we’ll be worried about that happening, for now. You’re also going to need to look at how this Progressed Sun talks to the North and South PROGRESSED NODES. The Nodes won’t move that much since they move quite slowly and in the Progressed chart, hardly at all. The Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars will make some decent shifts, however, and these are all giving you important clues as to how you and your Mission and Purpose change over time. Don’t forget to note the change in the Houses for all these planets and points – your Ascendant will shift too!
Taking these things into account, you’ll be able to determine how you have fundamentally changed and grown in relationship to that Mission & Purpose. It may take on a whole new meaning at age 45 or 60 than it did at 29.
